Poorly planned renovations that prioritise looks over function are becoming an increasingly risky trend, with new research showing they can devalue homes and complicate insurance claims.

According to Allianz, social media is driving many homeowners toward “picture-perfect” interiors, often at the expense of practicality, compliance and long-term maintenance. Their Home Care Report found that 40% of homeowners take a “set and forget” approach to maintenance, while 39% prioritise visual appeal and 35% focus on personal touches instead of essential upkeep.

Allianz has warned that failing to think through renovations from a maintenance and compliance perspective or neglecting to notify insurers before starting work can result in denied claims, particularly where building codes aren’t met or workmanship is poor.

The influence of social media and AI-generated inspiration images is also creating unrealistic expectations, sometimes showcasing layouts or features that don’t comply with Australian standards. Problematic trends include removing bathtubs (which can impact resale appeal), hiding toilet cisterns inside walls, and choosing high-maintenance materials without considering ongoing upkeep.
