When you move to a new suburb, one of the most exciting things is exploring your neighbourhood and discovering all of the great cafés, restaurants and coffee spots it has to offer.
Each suburb throughout Brisbane’s inner-west has its own unique hub of activity, with boutique shopping, charming cafés and specialty markets to explore. With so much choice, we’ve picked out some of our favourite coffee and brunch spots for you to enjoy. These spots are the suburbs hidden gems where locals go to grab their morning brew, the atmosphere is buzzing and the menu means you will always be back for more.
Abode Café, Taringa
Buzzing with activity, Abode Café (cover photo) is a favourite spot for locals to walk to for a great coffee or to relax in the courtyard over a delicious brunch. The owners welcome you to their ‘humble abode’ with a menu that focuses on seasonal produce and tastes just like home. Abode is also a big advocate of the local community, with several initiatives designed to give back to the area. ‘Gathers Unite’ encourages customers to bring in their garden produce to swap for a coffee or a jar of jam! They also offer free coffee grounds for your garden. Recently, the café supported ‘Street Smart Australia’, donating $1 from every coffee to help homeless people in Brisbane’s inner west.
Corner Store Café, Toowong
Run by Toowong locals Kim and Dylan, the Corner Store Café has firmly cemented itself as one of the best eateries in Toowong. On any given day, you’ll find the leafy courtyard filled with locals enjoying Feta, Chilli and Haloumi Smashed Avocado, Strawberry and Cream Waffles, or one of their signature salads. The quaint cottage on Sylvan Road is accompanied by their very own organic herb and vegetable garden, which provides farm fresh ingredients for the kitchen to use.
Peach Café, Auchenflower
A new edition to the western brunch scene, Peach Café opened its doors in 2019 on Haig Road. The cosy café has a vibrant menu with some great summer smoothies to go alongside your Nourish Bowl. Grab a coffee and let the kids enjoy the local playground which is conveniently next door.
Nowhere Espresso, Toowong
Fuelling the residents of Toowong is the crowd-favourite Nowhere Espresso. Best friends Emily and Eriko run the show and their indie flair shines through the friendly, vintage café. There is always a great atmosphere at this local hot spot. Whether you’re running in to grab a quick coffee (with a must-have side of Fig and Macadamia Loaf) or stopping by for their ‘Extra English’ Eggs Benedict, you will always be welcomed like an old friend.
Josie North, Toowong
Hidden behind the bustle of Sherwood Road, Josie North is tucked into a peaceful laneway that would be easy to overlook – but don’t make this mistake. The café has a welcoming, community feel to it, with share tables making the most of their cosy interiors. Forget the extravagant, trending brunch menus, Josie North offers delicious and simplified dishes with only the best quality ingredients. Pair their Feta and Mint Smashed Avocado with one of their signature coffee blends, and you are set for the day.
The Bardon Shed, Bardon
Your one-stop shop for espresso, delicatessen and fresh produce, The Bardon Shed offers a wide range of specialty products. Their menu is stacked with local favourites such as Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, Vegetarian Big Breakfast and Almond Croissants. Stick around for lunch and try their Pumpkin, Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne or a delicious salad bowl.
Cat & Fiddle Deli Café, Toowong
A lovely family run café, the Cat & Fiddle Deli offers a traditional breakfast menu with excellent coffee. Situated on the corner of Milton Road and Morley Street, this little gem is the perfect coffee stop for your morning run into the city. Their lunch menu has a fantastic South East Asian influence, including Vietnamese Beef Stew, Thai Chicken Rissoles and Vietnamese Chicken Salad. Not to mention delicious homemade cakes by Annie Loves Cakes!
